The Mozambican police said this Tuesday that it will hold criminally accountable two police officers for violently beating a woman to force her to confess to an alleged crime, in the district of Homoíne, Inhambane, southern Mozambique, .
“The institution distances itself from this behaviour […] at this point the corresponding report has already been drawn up and they will be held criminally accountable for their actions,” spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Nércia Bata, told the press in Inhambane.
At issue is a video circulating on social media, lasting around seven minutes, in which two police officers violently beat a woman with a baton, demanding that she show the goods she had allegedly stolen.
According to the local press, the agents in question and at least one other woman were allegedly trying to beat a confession out of their victim.
The Mozambican police stated that an investigation team was created to “find out what really happened for the agents to torture that citizen”, while condemning their actions. “At this moment we must say that the cause will not matter, the behaviour of the members of the PRM is not justified, it is reprehensible and the institution distances itself from this type of behaviour, as it is individual behaviour”, concluded Nércia Bata .
