A road inspection campaign by City of Beira municipal police culminated in the seizure of 160 motorbikes for transgressions and irregularities including lack of driving licences and irregular documentation.
Police spokesperson Edson João said the campaign was to assess compliance with recommendations issued at the beginning of this year by the municipal police in the interests of road safety in the city.
“We are at the end of May, the fifth month of the year,” João said. “We have given interested parties enough time to regularise their driving licences and documentation for carrying out passenger transport. We carried out awareness campaigns regarding the use of safety accessories, and now we are assessing compliance with the recommendations and sanctioning those who fall short.”
Brigades were deployed along the nine busiest arteries of the city, where accidents have been recorded most frequently, including Armando Tivane, Samora Machel, Condestável, Rua Kruss Gomes, Casa dos Bicos and Rua da Chôta.
The police spokesperson observed with displeasure that many motorcyclists are repeat offenders and continuing to circulate without safety accessories, or respecting maximum capacity when transporting people and goods, the very point of the campaign.
