Mozambique is being recognized internationally for its significant potential in persuading conflict-affected states to avoid genocide and contributing to global anti-terrorism efforts. This acknowledgment stems from the country’s proactive approaches during its term on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
In May, Mozambique chairs the UN’s primary decision-making body, emphasizing the inclusion of women and youth in global peace and security discussions, which are core responsibilities of the UNSC.
Mozambique’s initiatives, particularly this week’s debate on “The Role of Women and Youth in Peacekeeping,” are being hailed as highly significant at the UN. This recognition was voiced yesterday in New York by Alice Wairimu Nderitu, UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, and Vladimir Voronkov, UN Under-Secretary-General of the Office of Counter-Terrorism, during meetings with Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo.
In addition to the main agenda, Minister Macamo held various diplomatic meetings in New York, including a late-night session in Maputo with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Domingos Fernandes, Deputy Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the UN, reported that these meetings focused on courtesy exchanges and discussions on current global peace and security issues, including terrorism affecting Mozambique.
This growing recognition underscores Mozambique’s emerging role in promoting global peace and security through inclusive and proactive measures.
