A planned increase in minimum salaries in Mozambique, ranging from 3% to 10.53%, is to take retroactive effect from 1 April, according to the ministerial statutes to which Lusa had access on Friday.
According to the statutes with the salary updates, dated 22 May, these readjustments involve eight different sectors of the economy, with the last increase in minimum salaries having taken place in April 2023.
On April 30, Mozambique’s government approved minimum salary adjustments in the country, at a rate of between 3% and 10.53%, the deputy minister of labour and social security, Rolinho Manuel Farnela, announced at the time.
The readjustment was the result of a proposal by the Labour Consultative Commission, he said after a cabinet meeting in Maputo.
“The minimum points made public are not desirable, but possible, taking into account the current economic and social situation in our country,” said the deputy minister.
Among the sectors that have seen an increase, the segment that includes fishing stands out, with the lowest figures, which, after the 3.3% increase in the minimum salary, now stands at 4,941 meticais (€72) a month.
Also noteworthy is the sector that includes agriculture, livestock, hunting and forestry, where the monthly minimum was readjusted by 9.27% to 6,338 meticais (€93).
In the industrial and semi-industrial segment, the increase is 5%, to 6,531 meticais (€95).
In the mineral extraction industry of large companies and microfinance, among those with the highest minimum salaries, the rate of readjustment was 8%, rising to 14,183 meticais (€208), and 10.53%, rising to 15,741 meticais (€231).
