Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, in his capacity as President of the ruling Frelimo Party, on Friday publicly presented the Frelimo candidate for the 9 October presidential elections, Daniel Chapo, to the public of Zambezia province, the second largest provincial constituency in the country.
The Frelimo Central Committee elected Chapo, currently governor of the southern province of Inhambane, as the Party’s presidential candidate, at a three day meeting on 3-5 May.
Nyusi presented Chapo at a Friday rally in the Zambezia provincial capital, Quelimane, one of the municipalities run by the main opposition party, Renamo.
“This is the candidate whom we shall all carry from today to the election of 9 October”, declared Nyusi.
Frelimo, he said, “must be politically and ideologically sustainable”. What the party did today “must ensure that the public believes in it”.
Frelimo is not static, he added, and there was a pressing need to accompany the technological and ideological advances of other countries.
“Frelimo should govern without creating enemies in the world, in the region, on the continent”, said Nyusi. “We should have our friends throughout the entire world”.
Chapo told the crowd he hopes for strong and united work in the days prior to the October elections. “We are the timber, and Frelimo is the carpenter”, he declared, “and we are here to work together. The owner of the job is Frelimo and we are the contractors”.
He announced that, immediately prior to the start of the election campaign on 24 August, the Central Committee will hold an extraordinary meeting to approve the Frelimo election manifesto, which will be publicized across the country in the 45 days of the campaign.
Chapo promised to return to Zambezia to work with the Frelimo youth, women’s and veterans’ organisations “so that we can win and win well on 9 October”.
