Nine sectors of national economic activity have now reached consensus on the readjustment of minimum wages, and it is expected that the proposed salary rise percentages will soon be submitted to the Council of Ministers.
The understanding was reached during a meeting in Maputo on Friday between the government, labour unions and employers, chaired by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Margarida Talapa, as part of the second session of the Labour Consultative Commission (CCT).
Clara Munguambe, from the Mozambican Workers’ Organization – Central Sindical (OTM-CS), observed that consensus was reached after several rounds of negotiations, and that it was now up to the government to approve the adjustment levels.
Munguambe said that the minimum salaries currently in force are far from meeting the basic needs of families, at a time when the cost of living continues to rise.
