The Mozambican statesman made the recommendation yesterday (22) in Maputo, at the Heart Institute (ICOR) during the inauguration of new buildings for maternity services, neonatology, adult and pediatric inpatient services, and the commencement of fully equipped radiology services with modern MRI equipment, among others.
“This is another significant milestone in expanding health services to the Mozambican population. Collaboration and interdependence are essential not only between public and private, but also among private entities,” Nyusi said.
He explained that the country is large, with a considerable population, currently estimated at over 32 million inhabitants who may eventually need ICOR’s services.
The head of state encouraged other private providers to become examples of collaboration between public institutions and the private sector and together increase collaboration to improve access to quality health services for Mozambicans.
“I would also like to appeal for greater and increasingly collaboration and complementarity between the public and private systems in order to implement joint solutions to health problems. We should never view the private sector as a competing threat,” he urged.
Nyusi acknowledged ICOR’s contribution to treating sensitive and complex diseases, especially in underprivileged children with heart problems.
“In witnessing the suffering of hundreds of children due to the high cost and high technology required for heart surgeries, the project proponents led and now we hear that the choice was indeed excellent, bringing together energies, desires, and dreams in various valences of these volunteer professionals to bring hope to our children living with cardiac pain through internal but sustainable solutions,” he said.
“In these more than two decades of ICOR’s work, we have witnessed the highest gesture of philanthropy and love for others, where generosity has translated into free surgical interventions for Mozambican children from low-income families and treatment for cardiac surgery and catheterization, which is a less invasive cardiology technique for diagnosing and treating patients,” he said.
He stressed that ICOR has the vocation that distinguishes it as a pioneer and unique in carrying out this type of treatment, with the provision of over 2,500 open-heart surgeries for children and young people without financial means, constituting satisfaction for Mozambican families and these fellow Mozambican citizens, where they were restored to their lives with higher quality.
The head of state asserts that ICOR is a strategic partner of the Ministry of Health (MISAU) and recalls ICOR’s role in treating patients during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
He greeted and congratulated the institute’s management for their achievements, as well as for the decision to honor, at this stage of service growth, one of the best sons of the beloved homeland, Dr. Pascoal Mocumbi, one of the mentors of this project, by naming the maternity block after him.
The event was attended by former President of the Republic, Joaquim Chissano, and health sector leaders, among other guests.
