G20 finance ministers, central bankers to meet amid fractious geopolitics
Sunday Times / Kenya's former president Mwai Kibaki
Former Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki is recovering well at Sunninghill Hospital‚ a visitor who was with his family during supervised visiting hours said on Tuesday.
The former statesman‚ who is in his 80s‚ was admitted to the hospital on Sunday after reportedly suffering a stroke at his home in Muthaiga‚ Kenya.
Family members, including his son and his daughter, were seen walking in and out of the ward where he is being treated and could say only that he is doing “fine”.
“Contrary to negative reports which have been doing the rounds saying he has passed on‚ he is recovering well and we expect him to be released soon‚” said the man accompanying the family, with reference to reports emanating from Kenya.
Kibaki has reportedly undergone tests to determine the severity of his condition. He is said to be “awake and talking”.
Security in the ward is strict. A news team was stopped at the nurses’ station on Tuesday and told there were instructions not to admit anyone other than Kibaki’s close family.
“I can’t let you guys in. No one is allowed to see him. Only his close family members can be let in and even if I move away from this desk‚ my staff members know that not a single soul should be let in unless they are close family members he wants to see‚” said a senior matron who did not want to be named.
“I know about his condition, but I cannot tell you. You need to consult the Kenyan embassy on that. I am expecting them this afternoon, so they can update you‚” she said.
The Kenyan embassy has been approached for an update on the condition of Kibaki, who served as president from 2002-2013.
