The third ordinary session of the Frelimo Central Committee, which took place from Friday in the city of Matola, province of Maputo, ended yesterday, Saturday night with the succession process in leadership and the indication of the presidential candidate for the presidential elections on October 9 still to be decided.
According to VOA, after long hours of debates, the party approved a directive on the election of the future Frelimo president, appointing the Political Commission to prepare the list of candidates for the internal elections that will be submitted to the vote to choose the future leader and presidential candidate.
“We want internal elections that unite and strengthen Frelimo. We want to elect comrades who will properly represent our party,” said Filipe Nyusi in closing remarks at the meeting, as quoted by the same news portal.
However, Nyusi added that the vote will be held during an extraordinary session of the Central Committee, which will be convened in the coming days.
Mozambique is set to hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on October 9, the second for provincial governors, and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
The current President of the Republic and Frelimo is constitutionally barred from running for the presidency again because he is currently serving his second term as head of state, having been elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.
The deadline for the submission of candidate lists for the presidential election to the Constitutional Council in October is June 10.
