Nine people have been killed and seven injured following the floods that affected southern Mozambique more than a week ago, the spokesman for the Council of Ministers, Filimão Suaze, said on Tuesday.
Suaze was speaking at a press conference at the end of the weekly cabinet session.
The “urban floods” that hit the city of Maputo and the municipalities of Matola, Boane and Xai-Xai totally destroyed 99 houses and partially destroyed another 173, the cabinet spokesman said.
The storms also completely damaged 61 schools and partially damaged another 113, affecting more than 100,000 pupils and 800 teachers.
More than 60 health centres were also affected by the floods, said Filimão Suaze.
“It would be great if we had zero deaths, zero injuries, zero flooded houses and zero destroyed roads, but nowhere in the world is 100% safe,” said Suaze.
The government has played its “role to the limit of what the conditions allow,” he added.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by global climate change, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones during the rainy season.
