The national track athletics championships started this morning in the Zimpeto National Stadium.
Over 100 athletes will compete before the end of the competition on Saturday with the juveniles getting things going today. From 9.00 a.m., both sexes will compete in the triple jump, high jump, long jump, javelin, hammer and 100 to 1,500 metre races.
Like last year, the “Nationals” will have at least four representatives from each of the provinces.
Friday and Saturday will see the senior events: 100, 200, 400 metres (free and hurdlles), 800, 1,000, 1,500, 3,000 (obstacle), 5,000 and 10,000 meters, shot-put, discus, javelin, high and long jumps, triple jump and 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 metre relays.
The competition was originally scheduled for last month, but was repeatedly delayed for logistical reasons. Ferroviário de Maputo rail is currently the absolute champion, with the capital’s Matchedje and Desportivo sports clubs occupying second and third places respectively.
