The bishop of Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado, has repudiated the dissemination of videos of people being beheaded in the northern province of Mozambique, which is plagued by armed groups, and called for images of violence not to be spread.
“I am very surprised when I see people forwarding videos with horrible images of beheaded people,” said António Juliasse, speaking during the Easter Vigil on Saturday night.
“We must not preach misfortune,” Juliasse urged.
The religious leader also criticised the dissemination of videos of road accident victims, questioning whether this practice means that people have lost their sensitivity.
He called on Mozambican society to mobilise in favour of building peace and solidarity.
The province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
After a slight lull in 2023, these attacks have multiplied in recent weeks, creating around 100,000 displaced people in February alone, as well as a trail of destruction, death and displaced families.
