One dead and ten individuals with injuries ranging from serious and minor is the net result of clashes between the police and the population of Matsinho administrative post in Vandúzi, Manica province, this Sunday.
This was the day that Matsinho police station in Vandúzi district turned into a battlefield, with enraged residents trying to force the police to hand over two individuals being held there on suspicion of murdering motorcycle taxi drivers and stealing their motorbikes.
The police confirmed what happened, saying that the deceased was the victim of a stray bullet. Meanwhile, the two detainees, whom the mob hoped to lynch, deny the accusations against them.
Motorcycle taxi driver killing in Manica have been challenging the police. Last week alone, two motorcycle taxi drivers were killed.
Border guard policeman shot dead
Also in Vanduzi, a police officer assigned to the Border Guard was found dead in the Messica River.
Aníbal Mendonça, 43 years old and member of the Border Police assigned to the third regiment in Manica district, was found dead in the Messica river on Saturday morning.
The PRM in Manica says it does not know the motive behind the murder, but states that the victim was shot in the head and thrown into the river. The police and SERNIC called a press conference this Sunday to confirm the fact and said that the officer died while on vacation.
According to the Police, Aníbal Mendonça’s body had bullet holes in his head, which suggests that he had been shot with a firearm.
SERNIC says it is awaiting a post-mortem report to find out how many times Anibal was shot, hoping that this information will help solve the crime.
