Chinese medical team provides free healthcare in Mozambique to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties

Situation overview
The National Institute of Meteorology reported that Tropical Storm Filipo is tracking towards Mozambique. It is set to strengthen into a Severe Tropical Cyclone. Filipo is forecasted to make landfall over Inhambane province in the early hours of 12 March and to exit into the Indian Ocean on 14 March, after tracking over the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza ad Maputo.
On 12 March, between 100 and 250 mm of precipitation are expected in Inhambane, Gaza and Sofala provinces. On 13 March, between 50 and 100 mm of precipitation are expected in Gaza and Maputo provinces. There is a moderate risk (25-50%) of flooding in Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo provinces over the coming days.
According to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD), more than 525,000 people, 856 schools and 145 health centers are located in the areas considered to be at risk.
INGD estimates that, since the beginning of the rainy season, 55,494 people have been impacted. More than 3,500 houses have been partially or completely destroyed, 191 schools have been affected, infrastructure has been damaged including 37 water systems and 13 bridges.
Response
In the provinces considered to be at risk, the provincial and district Emergency Operation Centers (COE) have been activated, along with the local Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) local committees. Authorities have been implementing early warning actions, including by disseminating messages in local languages by SMS, radio, TV and through Local Disaster Risk Reduction committees. People are moving away from at-risk locations. The government has identified 155 accommodation centres, and prepositioned 88 boats and 20 drones are ready.
