The telecommunications sector in Mozambique has recorded a loss of about 50 million dollars as a result of Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which hit the country in 2019.
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, announced the losses in Maputo on Monday at the opening of an International Seminar on the Quality of Telecommunications Services, a four-day event organized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
In view of the worsening occurrence of natural disasters in some districts of the northern provinces of the country, Magala challenged the players in this sector to mobilize strategies to mitigate the impact of bad weather on communities.
“The players in the sector have to speed up the process of digitizing economies and expanding telecommunications to the most remote areas”, Magala said, adding that there is a need to take into account the aspect of cyber security.
The seminar will discuss matters such as regulation, technological evolution, and infrastructure resilience, among other issues.
In 2019, Mozambique was severely hit by tropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth. Idai devastated the central province of Sofala, particularly the city of Beira, while Kenneth struck the northern province of Cabo Delgado. The two cyclones left over 700 people dead and displaced 420,000 others.
