The Municipal Council of the City of Maputo owes solid waste collection and management companies of around 280 million meticais (US$4.3 million), president of the municipality, Rasaque Manhique, disclosed during a clean-up day in Maputo’s Bairro Central neighbourhood.
The president explained that the debt of 160 million meticais, announced in the previous mandate, involves two companies and pertains to the period February to December, 2023.
“The solid waste collection debt stands at around 280 million. These are debts reported with companies that collected at certain points, but there are several companies that carry out the work,” he explained.
Manhique said that the municipality was continuing to try to source the money to pay off the debts and improve garbage collection management services.
He also said he was dissatisfied with the state of the Hulene dump, and promised to create a mechanism for its closure.
“There is ongoing work to better organise the dump. The plan is to close the site, and in the next few days we will visit the future landfill site to see what stage it is in,” Rasaque Manhique noted.
