The International Organization for Migration (IOM) published the 20th Mobility Tracking Assessment (DTM). A total of 542,535 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) were registered in Cabo Delgado; only 55% of them are hosted by local population while the rest lives in 190 displacement sites. The top three hosting districts are Pemba, Metuge and Macomia. The number of returnees in Cabo Delgado amounts to 601,866 (Mocimboa da Praia, Palma and Mueda).
Since August 2023, the number of IDPs decreased by 17% while the increase in returnees stands at 11%. The report estimates presence of 141,877 IDPs in their districts of origin representing 26% of all IDPs in Cabo Delgado, with 60% living in proximity of district capitals.
Recent attacks by non-state armed groups (NSAGs) in Macomia, Chiure and Mecufi triggered mass displacement and have been characterised by extreme violence towards civilians, with reported casualties.
Several partners have temporarily suspended activities and evacuated personnel. Needs assessments and continued humanitarian support are put on hold due to security concerns.
