Four of the six main dams in the north of Mozambique had by last Sunday (18-02) reached their maximum capacity, as a result of the rainfall recorded in recent weeks.
These are Nampula and Nacala dams in Nampula province, Chipemb dam in Montepuez, (Cabo Delgado) and Locumue dam in Lichinga (Niassa).
The remaining dams are Mitucue, in Cuamba, Niassa province, and Mugica in Nampula province which, in the latest readings taken on Sunday, registered filling levels of 90.1% and 72.2% respectively.
The Regional Water Administration of the North, (ARA-NORTE) reported, in its latest bulletin on Sunday, that, for the following 24 hours, there was a forecast of oscillation in hydrometric levels, with a tendency to decrease in almost all river basins of the region under its jurisdiction, due to the reduction in rainfall.
Despite this, ARA-NORTE notes that communities in the districts of Chiúre, Mecúfi, Nairoto and Balama, all in the province of Cabo Delgado, should take precautionary measures and avoid crossing the rivers Megaruma, Messalo and Montepuez, the Megaruma and Montepuez rivers both being above alert levels.
In general, the entity that manages the river basins in the north of Mozambique calls on the population to continue taking note all bulletins regarding the evolution of river levels.
