The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) have arrested three suspects on suspicion of stealing 10,000 blood collection tubes destined for the exclusive use of the Ministry of Health (MISAU).
Information shared by police authorities indicates that the material was found in a house in the Torrone neighbourhood of Quelimane city, whose owners have absconded.
According to the PRM, of the three individuals detained, two work at Quelimane General Hospital and the third is a private company security agent assigned to the hospital facilities, who was involved in the robbery.
“We are facing a case of drug diversion from the National Health System. We learned, thanks to a tip-off, that there was a ring dedicated to stealing laboratory material, and it was thanks to our investigations that we were able to locate these three individuals,” a spokesperson detailed.
However, the PRM says that the two health professionals deny accusations of the theft of this material, whereas the security guard admits to opening up a warehouse so that the pair could abstract the blood collection tubes.
“I received orders from a boss to open the warehouse because he intended to take some material and, after much insistence, I ended up opening the doors and he removed these goods used in the laboratory,” the guard said.
