The first municipal parking silo (multi-storey parking garage) in Maputo came into operation on Monday (12-01). It has parking for more than 400 vehicles – and motorists are already demanding a reduction in the fees.
Tomás Manjate was one of the first motorists to park his vehicle in the municipal parking silo which came into operation this Monday.
The opening of the car park to motorists, which was scheduled for March 1st, took place more than two weeks after its inauguration on January 26.
With the infrastructure now open, drivers like Manjate hope to see their vehicles better looked-after.
“It’s a very good place, because the car is parked in better conditions. When we park our cars outside, we suffer theft of vehicle parts, but here we hope that won’t happen,” Manjate said.
However, some drivers say the parking fees are too high.
“I think the prices are not that comfortable, because the cost of living is not easy for any of us. This amount must then be reversed in favour of motorists, that is, it must be reflected in the quality of roads and safety,” Fúlvio Samuel commented.
Drivers must pay 20 meticais to park for one hour, or 160 meticais for eight hours. For reserved parking, the fee is 8,000 meticais per month.
The Municipal Mobility and Parking Company EME promised more details about the operation of the car park this Tuesday.
