The Foundation for Community Development (FDC) and the Order of Architects of Mozambique have together launched the annual Júlio Carrilho award in Maputo, a way of honouring and preserving the legacy of the first president of that order and the first minister of Public Works after the independence of Mozambique, who died in 2021.
Júlio Carrilho was also an administrator at FDC, assistant professor and director of the Centre for Habitat Development Studies at the Faculty of Architecture and Physical Planning at Eduardo Mondlane University.
The award, divided into two parts, aims to distinguish the best undergraduate on the architecture course, plus the best architecture project developed by people up to 30 years of age.
The launch of the award took place during the first Congress of Architects and was attended by the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, President of the Maputo Municipal Council, Rasaque Manhique, Secretary of State for the City of Maputo, Vicente Joaquim, PCA of FDC, Graça Machel and children of Júlio Carrilho, in addition to professionals in the sector.
“We want work that encompasses the rational use of water and the use of renewable energy to be valued, so that we can contribute to actions to adapt to climate change,” Graça Machel said in her intervention.
In turn, Fernanda Machungo, Júlio Carrilho’s wife, recalled her husband’s qualities as a leader, husband, friend and teacher, highlighting his kindness, honesty and patience.
“It is impossible to mention Júlio without mentioning his passion for architecture. Family outings on Sundays were filled with stories and lessons, making each day with him an enriching and educational experience,” she said.
