The weather forecast for the city of Beira over the coming months of the current rain/cyclone season indicate the possibility of moderate flooding, with the Zavale River Basin entering alert levels, delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), Aristides Armando, told ‘Noticias’.
He explained that, due to its geographical characteristics creating vulnerable neighbourhoods, and with ineffective drainage systems, the city of Beira may, given the rate at which rain has been falling, face some difficulties.
“Any level of precipitation already represents a risk, even if it is just 50 millilitres. There is therefore a pressing need to ensure that drainage ditches are always in a state to facilitate the flow of water,” he recommended.
The INGD delegate characterized the first months of the current rainy season in Sofala province as “calm, compared to the same period last year. However, from October to January 18 of this year, there were heavy rains accompanied by lightning in the city of Beira and some districts of the province”.
