The Mozambican police have detained a man and his friend on suspicion of trying to sell, for €5,000, two of his grandchildren to a merchant for organ harvesting, the force in the city of Dondo have said.
“We are in a flagrant human trafficking situation, in which the individuals presented here would have tried to sell two individuals for amounts estimated at 350,000 meticais [€5,000],” said Sofala police spokesperson Dercio Chacate.
The men proposed selling the two boys to a merchant, after taking them from their parents’ home in the district of Marromeu last Saturday, according to the police.
Chacate told journalists in Dondo that the police became aware of the transaction through a tip-off, and are being assisted by the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) in identifying the mastermind of the crime.
In this case, it was the trader himself who called the police and exposed the grandfather and his friend, who were subsequently arrested.
The police say that the minors have already been returned safely to their families.
