One person died and 28 others were injured when a bus crashed on Sunday morning in Zavala, Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, the Mozambican police told Lusa on Monday.
The passenger transport bus had “begun to overtake a light vehicle (…) and, when trying to return to its lane, it went off the road to the left and overturned”, police spokesperson Nércia Bata said.
According to the police, of the 28 injured, two are in serious condition and the rest suffered minor injuries. They were all taken to the Zavala District Hospital.
“It should be noted that so far there is no indication of any victim requiring hospital transfer or whose life is at risk,” Bata said, adding that the bus driver’s alcohol test was negative.
In the same district, on the 3rd of this month, at least four people died and another 12 were injured when a passenger transport van crashed.
Road accident rates in Mozambique are classified as dramatic by several organizations.
Mozambican authorities routinely point to excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol as the main causes of accidents.
On average, at least a thousand people die annually on the country’s roads, according to data provided to Lusa by the Mozambican Association for the Victims of Road Insecurity (AMVIRO).
