Academic [and Frelimo member Lourenço do Rosário expressed this sentiment in a recent interview with the newspaper Domingo.
“The Frelimo candidate for the seventh presidential elections will win resoundingly, just as this party will win the majority of seats in parliament because Renamo and the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) are still discussing leadership succession,” declared do Rosário, for whom Renamo and MDM are ill-prepared to dislodge Frelimo from power.
“We found that Renamo is currently agitated. Instead of organising for elections, it is trying to tidy house and will make noise in the run-up to it. The MDM in national terms is practically disappeared, and will probably not have any deputies in the next legislature,” do Rosario says.
In his understanding, the MDM is a party that fails to make itself felt at crucial moments.
“It is true that the municipality of Beira won well in the last local elections, but in national terms, we do not feel in any way its role as under the leadership of the late Daviz Simango,” Rosário declares, for whom the party lacks a charismatic figure who can stand alongside “the colossi”.
At this point, the Domingo newspaper source explains, the opposition parties should move to show that they have already started their preparations by adopting strategies to avoid fraud and nominate charismatic figures who can win the sympathy of the electorate.
Instead, these parties are “discussing and washing dirty linen in public, as is happening in the Renamo party”.
Unlike the opposition, Frelimo has an intelligent way of managing its problems.
“During the noise of the local elections, some [Frelimo] figures were critical, but now they are all silent, but that does not mean that the problems have been resolved. It is a party with another experience,” he concludes.
