Three citizens of Chinese nationality have been detained on suspicion of causing the death of a fellow countryman in Nampula province, northern Mozambique, over an alleged debt of more than 700,000 meticais (€10,000), the Mozambican police announced today.
The incident occurred in a restaurant in Nampula city, located near the Museu Nacional de Etnologia (MUSET), last Sunday.
Police spokesperson Rosa Chaúque told reporters. that the victim had “taken out a weapon in an attempt to protect himself”, but the attackers successfully assaulted him, allegedly over a debt of 700,000 meticais owed to one of the attackers, now detained.
The victim was promptly taken to a hospital, but lost his life on Monday morning.
According to the witness, cited by Notícias, the deceased had taken his luxury car for repairs at one of his fellow countryman’s workshops and, during the repair, the vehicle reportedly suffered unspecified damage. The victim was unhappy and decided not to pay in full for the service provided.
Dissatisfied with the client’s position, the person in charge of the workshop contacted another fellow countryman, supposedly a security agent at one of the companies, in order to forcefully collect the debt, in the amount of 769 thousand meticais.
According to the police spokeswoman, the attackers first tried to escape and then to bribe the Nampula provincial police commander with a sum of 100,000 meticais (€1,431) to avoid being detained.
Chaúque said that the case would follow “its legal procedures”, urging the public not to take justice into their own hands.
“We urge people who have a license to use and carry weapons, to use them responsibly,” she said.
