DR Congo election authorities say first results from the general election will be published on Friday, after a chaotic vote marked by severe logistical problems.
The impoverished but mineral-rich central African nation held four concurrent polls on Wednesday for president, lawmakers for national and provincial assemblies, and local councillors.
Massive delays and bureaucratic chaos marred the vote, with some polling booths unable to open at all.
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s electoral commission, Ceni, extended voting in some areas until Thursday.
Speaking on local radio, high-ranking Ceni official Didi Manara said that the electoral commission will begin to publish initial results for the presidential election on Friday.
“I’m talking about trends,” he added.
President Felix Tshisekedi, 60, is running for a second five-year term, against a backdrop of years of economic growth but also little job creation and soaring inflation.
The DRC is one of the poorest countries in the world, despite its huge reserves of copper, cobalt, gold and other minerals.
Eighteen opposition candidates are also running for president, in the first-past-the-post vote.
