Mozambique Minister of Transport and Communication Mateus Magala took time on the side-lines of the COP28 climate summit to discuss Mozambique’s efforts to embed sustainability across its rapidly growing transport and logistics ecosystems.
Asked how sector developments support wider climate and economic goals amidst multiplying extreme weather threats, Magala underscored transport’s far-reaching significance.
“Investing in resilient transport infrastructure and services creates a more efficient, competitive logistics backbone to drive national and regional commerce whilst improving climate risk management,” he stated.
Citing recent initiatives to improve meteorological data and early warning systems, the Minister said “anticipating and preparing for adverse events protects assets and connectivity whilst minimizing disruption to supply chains.”
Magala also pointed to opportunities linked to the global net zero emissions push, arguing more climate-compatible mobility sustains green growth across domains.
“Greening of transport reinforces sustainable practices economy-wide – supporting renewable energy roll-out, spurring innovations in biofuels and EVs, and fostering circular economy approaches that increase efficiency of production and consumption,” he noted.
“More than donors, we are looking for partners. There are many bankable projects in Mozambique`s pipeline – Maputo`s BRT and developing the biofuels` supply chain are two examples” – he added
With African leaders targeting a massive expansion of renewables-based manufacturing, Magala concluded climate-aligned mobility solutions can catalyse wider industrialization aligned with planetary boundaries.
“There is no green supply chain without green industries – transport decarbonization underpins realization of our interlinked development and climate ambitions.”
