The secretary general of Frelimo, the party in power in Mozambique, considered on Saturday that the victory in the municipal elections on November 11 reflects “the clear rise of the popularity base” of the political party, calling for the acceptance of the results as now declared.
“From the assessment we make of these results, there is a demonstration of a clear rise in our party’s popularity base,” Roque Silva said at a press conference about the proclamation of the results of the local elections by the Constitutional Council (CC) on Friday.
The secretary general of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) said that the party managed to win in more municipalities in the elections on October 11 this year than in the 2018 ballot.
“Of the 53 municipalities that the country had [in 2018], Frelimo had lost in nine and won in the rest, which means that our victory [then] stood at around 83%,” he pointed out.
Roque Silva appealed to the parties to accept the results proclaimed by the CC, arguing that the political party in power accepts the outcome of the ballots.
The CC, the last instance of appeal in electoral processes in Mozambique, on Friday proclaimed Frelimo the winner of the municipal elections on October 11 in 56 municipalities, against the previous 64 announced by the National Elections Commission (CNE), with the Resistencia Nacional Moçambicana (Renamo), the main opposition party, winning in four, while ordering elections to be partially repeated in three others and completely repeated in one.
The president of Renamo, Ossufo Momade, said on Saturday in Maputo that his party does not recognize the results of the local elections proclaimed by the CC, calling on the population to demonstrate.
“In view of this shame for democracy and the denial of the will of Mozambicans, the Renamo party reiterates that it does not recognize the published results,” Renamo leader Momade told a press conference.
The main political force of the opposition “encourages all Mozambicans to continue with the demonstrations”, he continued.
Ossufo Momade held the President of the Republic and of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, the CC and the electoral bodies responsible for any consequences that could result from demonstrations against the results of the local elections, without specifying what these might be.
He said that Renamo will appeal to international organisations so that “electoral truth” can be restored, maintaining that “there cannot be one democracy for Mozambique and another for the European Union”.
