‘Women Here and Now’ at the Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Centre in Maputo
‘From Here and From There’ – Collective exhibition @ Fundação Couto
A collective exhibition entitled ‘Daqui e Dali’ [“From Here and From There”], bringing together visual artists António Mucavele, Bruno Chichava, Miguel Levy, Nhongwene and Simbraz runs until December 15th at the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation.
The five artists come together at the exhibition to raise reflections on the Mozambican social context from different perspectives. All of them, from different pasts and presents, even differing in years of experience and life, have as a factor of interest the mismatches or disagreements between the scenes represented.
The chosen theme, according to curator Yolanda Couto, although approached in different aspects both in the technique used and in the form of personal interpretation, is, however, in this exhibition society in general in a uni-multiplicity of aspects. Hence the chosen title that seeks to confer the freedom of interpretation that challenges us in this eclectic exhibition, but also the maturity of what each of the artists pursues, as a narrative and style.
António Mucavele (born 1997) presents a curious work of applying mixed techniques and materials to construct his sculptures. Using charcoal as a “raw material”, his sculptures take on shapes that represent true characters in full action.
Bruno Chichava (born 1990), known for his walls transformed into canvases, his works gravitate towards a combination of colours and symbols that remind us of relationships with the imaginary, but with nature in dialogue with a mythical Africa.
Miguel Levy (born 1957, Portugal) has in his brush the textures of the city, people’s daily lives on the sidewalks, in the streets and even in their privacy. In his paintings, characters stand out that are immediately close to our short memories and relationships with spaces and characters.
Nhongwene (born 1978) his works provide an insight into the artistic subject, the dilemmas and meditations of the interior that use artistic inspiration to represent “portraits” or anonymous figures, but that wander in the mind and soul of the artist.
Simbraz (born 1992) presents the colours and people almost as they are, it is up to us to give them narratives. The challenge remains, given the inspiration and artistic talent.
