Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi inaugurated on Thursday a hospital, in Machaze District, in the central province of Manica, budgeted at 382.2 million meticais (5.9 million dollars, at the current exchange rate).
The hospital, which was built from scratch, under the presidential initiative “One district, One hospital”, has capacity for 200 beds, an operating block, a maternity facility, a physiotherapy room, a general nursing ward, and a morgue capable of accommodating six corpses. It also has six houses for health professionals.
According to Nyusi, “Machaze is experiencing a development that impresses us a lot. Electricity has brought changes at all levels. Trade is flowing and this shows that the population is hard-working and wants to have a better life”, he said.
The President also said that some challenges that persist can only be overcome through work. He mentioned water supply and the improvement of access roads, as among the problems to be solved.
“The government is committed to working to solve the problems that still affect the population. We didn’t have a reference hospital. What was a dream is today a reality”, he said.
After the ceremony, Nyusi passed through the market, in the district capital, Chitobe, where he interacted with the population and visited the only commercial bank that operates in Machaze.
“I encourage you to continue with development actions”, he declared. “In the past, this district was not like this. Almost everything was missing. There was no decent hospital, market or other social infrastructure. Today, everything has changed. We now have the second largest health unit in the province. Trade is flowing and there is a bank where people can save. That’s growth,” he said.
“There are improved stores, butchers and, as we can now see, there is also an international bus terminal that connects Machaze district to South Africa. It is a step forward and we can say that the district is progressing”, he added.
