Five to six sea turtles are found dead on the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (PNAB) in Inhambane province every month, Notícias reports.
Cited by Notícias, Bazaruto Archipelago National Park administrator Armindo Nguenha hypothesises that the phenomenon is associated with marine pollution, considering the increasing volume of solid waste found in the marine conservation area.
For example, in the last three years alone, more than 400,000 tons of solid waste was collected on the Bazaruto islands, 198,000 tons of it plastic waste. Of this total, 114,000 tons were collected in 2021, 160,000 in 2022 and 121,000 this year.
Some of the garbage collected is produced in Europe and Asia and carried by wind and ocean currents to Bazaruto and other parts of the African continent, Notícias concludes.
