Around 150 primary school teachers hired in Beira last year have not been paid since they started working in January this year. Education authorities tell them that the salary delay is related to the Single Salary Table (TSU).
A total of 156 primary school teachers were admitted to the National Education System in September 2021 and began their activities in schools in Beira city, Sofala province, in January this year.
But, said the first teacher interviewed, “Until now, we find ourselves without our respective salaries”.
“They put me in a school very far from home, so my family and I have been going through difficulties because of late pay,” another teacher reported.
“Some of us come from other provinces. Here, in Sofala, we have to pay rent and transport,” said another.
The 146 have been asking the education sector for an explanation, and the justification they hear is that “they face difficulties relating to registration, due to the changing of the system from the previous table to the Single Salary Table (TSU)”.
For teachers, blaming the TSU for not paying their salaries for 10 months makes no sense. “What we are asking is that the entities that have the prerogative to resolve our situation listen to us. We are teachers. We want to work, but for all work, there is some stimulus.”
Teachers held a meeting this Monday with the Beira District Administrator, education sector managers and the finance sector to discuss the salary arrears.
“From the meeting we had, we have always heard the same music, we can say that they are working on the subject, but there is no congruence in what they say. It seems like they’re not taking us seriously,” one teacher commented.
Education managers refused to discuss the matter with the press and the teachers in the end said that, despite being upset, they would continue to teach while waiting for their salaries, so as not to harm the students.
