Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) says it has no evidence about the six dead bodies allegedly found in Matadouro neighbourhood, in the central city of Beira.
SERNIC spokesperson, Alfeu Sitoe, told reporters that after some media outlets reported the death of six people with signs that they had suffered assault, investigations were carried out, but no evidence was found.
“Considering the work that we carried out at the location, in the Paiol region, nothing was found. Neighbours also didn’t see anything, they were even taken by surprise. The local authorities also found nothing”, he said.
According to Sitoe, police officers were also sent to the morgue at Beira Central Hospital to investigate “but the hospital had not recorded the entry of dead people with signs of assault or other criminal cases.”
Sitoe noted, however, that the place where the deaths are reported to have occurred is abandoned. He recalled that, in the same place, last June, the police found a dead body, but the crime had occurred in another place.
“The criminals took the body to that place because nobody lives there. SERNIC investigated the case and we caught three people in connection with the crime”, he said.
Nevertheless, regarding the six bodies, he said, there is no evidence. “People create rumors that end up disturbing order and public tranquility, and disturb the residents of the community,” Sitoe said.
