The national men’s and women’s senior beach volleyball teams left the country’s capital yesterday afternoon for the city of Txacala, in Mexico, where they will participate in the Beach Volleyball World Championships.
Ainadino Martinho (Igor) and Jorge Monjane (Jojó) , together with Ana Paula Sinaportar and Vanessa Muianga, experienced pairs with medals won at Zone VI and continental levels, will defend the colours of the national flag.
Igor and Jojó are the current runners-up in Africa, while Ana Paula and Vanessa are the third-best African duo.
The delegation is led by the president of the Mozambican Volleyball Federation, Mahomed Valá, and also includes national coach Alexandre Pontel, who will guide the national team.
Mozambique was on the verge of failing to participate in the competition, before travel expenses were guaranteed by the Mozambique Olympic Committee and the Sports Promotion Fund.
Mozambique will seek to earn sufficient points in this competition to reach the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the national team arriving in Mexico as African runner-up in men’s, and fifth place in women’s.
Here are Mozambique’s forthcoming opponents:
Women – Group L
Mexico – Gutierriz/Flores
Switzerland – Verge Deprê/A Mader
Thailand – Naraphornrapat/Worapeerachavakorn
Men – Group A
Norway – Mol/Serum
Netherlands – Boermans/De Groot
Italy – Lupo/Rossi
