The Secretary of State for the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, Jaime Neto, has called for the efficient management of mineral resources, in order to ensure greater sustainability of the national economy.
According to Neto, who was speaking on Thursday at the opening of the fifth edition of the Nampula Gems Fair (FAGENA), an event attended by 35 exhibitors, “there is currently growth in geological and mining activity, associated with the expansion of geological surveys that have culminated in the discovery of new minerals. The sector’s legal framework has made it possible to attract investment in the area of research, production and export of our resources, putting our country on the world map.”
Neto said that the fair will allow products and knowledge to be shared, facilitating a better reflection on the current state of affairs with a view to ensuring an increase in processing minerals inside the country.
“From this perspective, we would like to recognise the role of teaching and research in this area. The increase and diversification of training in geology, mining engineering and areas related to the geosciences is an unequivocal sign of the government’s concern to improve the level of knowledge about the occurrence of minerals in the country, as well as the capacity for direct intervention in the implementation of best practices and employability”, he said.
FAGENA, Neto added, can be the main showcase for precious metals, semi-precious metals and gems mined and marketed in Mozambique, where the province of Nampula, due to its geographical location, stands out at national level as a marketing centre, but also as a centre for reflection on best practices and gains for investors and the country.
“We are taking this opportunity to reiterate the government’s commitment to finding mechanisms that will ensure that the potential of Mozambique and of our province in the area of mineral resources is showcased and that investments are attracted to various areas, not only the extractive industry, but also tourism, agriculture and fisheries, among others”, Neto said.
FAGENA, which closes next Saturday, will be marked by a jewellery parade and include an exhibition of minerals, business meetings, debates between researchers and specialists in the field in order to promote business opportunities. It also counts on the participation of large companies and other organisations involved in research from various regions of the country.
