Police in Tete have arrested 10 suspects for the robbery and murder of motorcycle taxi drivers in the central Mozambique province, a corporation source told Lusa this Friday.
The men were detained in possession of seven motorbikes between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Of the 10 suspects, three “carried out the robberies and the remaining seven were – among other tasks – intermediaries in the sale of the motorcycles,” police spokesperson Feliciano da Câmara told reporters.
“They threatened the victims and stole their motorbikes, in some cases with the robbery ending in death,” da Câmara said, adding that among the men were those who had killed two people in the Matundo and Chingodzi neighbourhoods.
The police reaction comes after the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) on Wednesday announced the death of the former party Youth League president following a robbery in the city’s Matundo neighbourhood on Saturday.
According to Renamo, a group of unknown people stole the motorbike and money from Salifo Selemane, whose body was found severely beaten.
The Mozambican police said that the two people murdered, one of whom was killed in Matundo, also showed signs of violence, and their motorbikes were among those seized with the 10 detained suspects.
Renamo spokesperson in Tete, Nuno Zacarias, mentioned the possibility that the murder of Salifo Selemane was linked to political causes, but left it to the police to clarify the case.
Salifo Selemane was president of the Renamo Youth League in the Matundo neighbourhood in 2018.
