The former coach of Mozambique’s national soccer team and one of Benfica’s reference figures between the late 60s and 70s, Augusto Matine, will be honoured by the Mozambican Football Federation on August 26 in recognition of his valuable contribution to the development of the sport in the country, particularly in coaching, his favourite area of work.
According to newspaper Domingo, the ceremony will take place in Maputo with guests from diverse fields, and will mark the beginning of a Federation program extoling the contribution of various figures to the development of Mozambican football, both inside and outside the country.
Born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), on February 13, 1947, Augusto Matine made played in Portugal for much of his career, between 1969 and 1981. Playing as a midfielder, he represented Benfica, V. Setúbal, Portimonense, Desportivo das Aves and finally Estrela da Amadora, where he was also youth coach for many years.
When he returned to Mozambique, he took on the national team, then coached Ferroviario and Desportivo, both in Maputo, before going back to the Federation training department.
FMF president Alberto Simango Jr. told Domingo that it is necessary to constantly remind younger athletes of key figures in Mozambican football, and that Augusto Matine is a member in his own right of the group of notables still alive. “The Federation will not do anything but applaud, with all the footballing family, the effort and achievements of Augusto Matine’s career. We believe that Mozambique should know how to repay the best of its children,” said Simango Jr.
The president explained that the ceremony would also be a moment for Matine himself to recall some of the people with whom he shared great footballing moments. “We will certainly find time for Augusto Matine to tell guests his lessons from soccer. We are talking about a person who represented giants Benfica and the Portuguese national team. He knows the changing room better than anyone, so the new players must draw on his experience.”
The honouring of Augusto Matine will coincide with the first-year anniversary of the current Mozambican Football Federation management
