“Arte Assinada no Feminino” at MUSART
Kugoma 2023 is here!
The 14th edition of Kugoma, the oldest cinema forum in Mozambique, takes place from 31 August to 6 September, in an event organised by the Association of Friends of the Cinema Museum in Mozambique,
The Official Opening Session takes place this Thursday, August 31st, at 7pm, in the large room of the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center with the national premiere of the Angolan feature film ‘Our Lady of the Chinese Shop’, by Ery Claver , with the presence of the director and real-time sign language translation , followed by a cocktail.
The film is preceded by the usual cine-concert, this year with Władysław Starewicz ‘s iconic animated short film ‘The Cameraman’s Revenge’” (1912), with musical direction by Euclides Anatolly, performed live.
The program, always dedicated to African cinema, this year offers dozens of national premieres, including the Kugoma Conversations series, the Kugoma School Sessions and the Pitch Session – a collaboration with the national content producer Maningue Magic, from Multichoice, – and, once again awards the New Authors Prize, for Mozambique and the PALOP, in collaboration with the PALOP-TL Cinema and Audiovisual Network and with the support of Panavido Moçambique.
Kugoma’s 2023 program includes Itinerancy Sessions FESTin – Itinerant Portuguese-Language Film Festival (Portugal), partnerships with the Kanemo Cineclube and ICine – Fórum de Cinema do Interior Paulista, from Brazil, with the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (France ) and with the Mozambican-German Cultural Centre’s Short Film Competition.
The program features more than three dozen short films, documentaries, fiction and animation, from Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Brazil, Portugal, Uganda, and co-productions with Somalia, Ghana, Senegal and Egypt, shown in a complete program in the auditorium of the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center and the terrace of the Cine-Teatro Scala.
This year, we highlight the special program Maningue Magic, which includes, in addition to the Pitch Session, two conversations with the producers, directors and actors of the popular Mozambican telenovela “Maida” and the series “A Infiltrada”, “A Influencer” and “ Kuga Munu”, which mark a new and historic stage in Mozambique’s l audiovisual production.
Other conversations are scheduled with Nildo Essá, with a look at “Behind the production of KIBWE”; Madiano Marcheti, on “Script Development”; Inadelso Cossa, on “African cinema at international festivals” and Ery Claver, special guest of this edition, on the “Relationship between Director and Assistant”.
Finally, on September 6th, – as this is an event organized by the Association of Friends of the Cinema Museum in Mozambique, – Kugoma will announce the winners and award the prizes of an Architectural Competition for students of the Faculdade de Arquitectura e Planeamento Físico to propose designs for the future headquarters of the Cinema Museum, a partnership of the Associação dos Amigos do Cinema de Moçambique with the FAPF and the School of Communication and Arts (ECA), at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane – UEM.
