UNDP Mozambique recently finished delivering a four-day training course on how to use the eMonitor+ platform – a digital platform specifically designed to monitor digital media platforms using artificial intelligence tools – in combating disinformation and hate speech in electoral processes .
The training culminated with the acquisition of practical digital media monitoring skills.
“I have gained enough knowledge and skills to combat fake news and hate speech during the election process,” said Mafuquene Junior, one of the media monitors trained.
As part of the UNDP South-South cooperation efforts, the eMonitor+ platform was developed by UNDP Tunisia to monitor digital media platforms using artificial intelligence, identifying, among other factors, irregularities, misinformation, hate speech and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) during electoral processes.
This initiative is supported by the people and governments of Norway , Canada and Spain, through the UNDP Mozambique Democratic Elections project.
Fact Checking and Social Media Listening
According to UNDP’s website, “eMonitor+ is a platform that helps scan online media posts to identify, electoral violations, misinformation, hate speech, political polarization and pluralism, and online violence against women. Such data analysis enables election commissions and media stakeholders to observe the prevalence, nature and impact of online violence”.
Still according to the same source the eMonitor+ enables “Fact Checking” and #Social Media Listening”
“Fact-Checking
“The platform is equipped with automated data collection and fact-checking tools designed to verify the accuracy and authenticity of digital content. Once information is checked and validated, articles are published and available publicly to promote truth and credibility in the digital space.
“Social Media Listening
“Our AI-powered system is trained to map digital space and monitor trends on various topics, such as misinformation, hate speech, political polarization, and online violence against women, journalists, and marginalized groups. This provides the foundation for informed, evidence-based strategies and works towards creating safer and more inclusive digital environments”.
And that’s a wrap! The #insightful 4-day training on how to use eMonitor+ to #combat mis/disinformation & hate speech around #elections concluded w/ practical exercises on monitoring digital media.
