Five months after the Eduardo Monlane University (UEM) Law School put up a memorial in honour of Gilles Cistac and gave his name to the library, the college management has reversed its decision on the grounds that the process did not follow university rules.
“In its meeting of 29 March 2016, the Council of the Law School analysed the process of assigning Gilles Cistac’s name and concluded that it did not comply with current UEM regulations and so declared the process void, as being an act whose symbolism goes beyond the Law School policy area,” the statement reads.
The document says that before taking a decision, the college should have followed certain steps. “As a matter of ethics and justice, the assignment of a name in the Eduardo Mondlane University is governed by the UEM Name Allocation Regulations which require, among other steps, the submission of the proposal to the UEM Name Verification Technical Committee,” the text explains.
The statement ends by expressing the law faculty’s intent to propose the name of Gilles Cistac for the faculty library.
Gilles Cistac, constitutional lawyer and university professor, was shot dead in the centre of Maputo two years ago and to date, the perpetrators remain unknown.
