The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) and the Municipal Police of Maputo this Tuesday (08-08) banned the Medical Association of Mozambique (AMM) from holding a health fair at the Zimpeto Municipal Field. The initiative had been initially endorsed by the Municipal Council for the health area.
According to AMM spokesperson Napoleão Viola, the ban on holding the health fair came from an anonymous order preventing the doctors holding a social activity aimed at supporting the population. “It seems that someone is against the provision of health services to the Mozambican population for free and this penalises the population,” Viola said.
Viola explained that, with the reduction in medical care, doctors decided to head to the Zimpeto Municipal field to provide free health care at a fair. According to Viola, general practitioners, a dentist and specialists in different areas were present to support the population by providing diagnostic services and treatment of some chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and others.
The PRM and Municipal Police initially let the doctors begin work around 9:00 a.m. yesterday but, two hours later, they were informed that the activity was not authorised.
This was later denied by Viola, who said that the AMM submitted a request to hold the fair to the Municipal Health Council last week, and the event had been authorised. The municipality had even provided material such as tables and chairs so that the doctors could carry out their work.
