Vodacom Moçambique on Thursday, July 27, presented its new Chairman of the Board of Directors, who will assume the position for a period of three years within the framework of the rotation among the mobile operator’s group of shareholders. Lucas Chachine was elected on behalf of Emotel, SA and his mandate will last until June 2026.
This is the second time that Lucas Chachine has taken the position of Chairman of Vodacom, having already been in charge of the company between 2015 and 2017. Until the date of his election, the new chairman was a member of the Board of Directors of the company, giving him extensive knowledge and proven experience in commanding Vodacom Mozambique’s destiny.
Highly experienced in terms of business management and direction, Chachine intends to continue the projects that were being developed by his predecessors, and consolidate Vodacom’s position as an innovative institution which has come to stand out in the telecommunications in Mozambique, supporting the much-needed digitization of the national economy.
“It is with great emotion that I once again assume the presidency of Vodacom Mozambique,” Chachine said. “The responsibility is great, the challenges are enormous, but the desire to offer better services to society, to connect every Mozambican and together to make Mozambique grow, overcomes any adversity. I am happy to know that I am once again part of a fantastic team, committed to the work and ready to provide answers in an increasingly competitive market, where the telecommunications industry must be in constant technological evolution. In recent years, Vodacom has remained at the forefront of innovation and commitment to improving the service provided. The company has been expanding the base of social investment in the country, with an emphasis on the digital inclusion programme in public schools, through the provision of computer equipment and connectivity.”
Vodacom’s new helmsman highlighted the need to continue to expand the telecommunications network, improve quality and, always, understand the needs of customers in all its products and services. “We want to make a difference and I believe we are on the right track, so I want to thank my predecessor, Nuno Quelhas, for having maintained the mission of Vodacom Mozambique,” he emphasised.
Aware of the challenges, Chachine sees his re-election as a unique opportunity to once again be part of a multidisciplinary team, determined and confident in the work he develops. “For now, the strategy involves consolidating Vodacom’s position as an active company in Mozambican society and, thus, continuing to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable society,” he noted.
For the new chairman, the spirit of cohesion and teamwork that characterises Vodacom’s employees is fundamental for the company’s growth.
Chachine highlighted the need for continued commitment to support the financial inclusion of Mozambicans through M-Pesa, recalling that, by 2025, Vodacom intends 75% of all Mozambicans to be connected through the financial platform, and for the telephone network to reach around 21 million Mozambicans across the country.
Although he is leaving the chairmanship of Vodacom, Nuno Quelhas remains a member of the Board of Directors. The entry of the new chairman represents a renewal of Vodacom’s commitments to remain leader in the telecommunications market and continue to make a difference in the daily lives of all Mozambicans.
