Former Mozambique national football team player Diogo Alberto died of an illness on Monday night at the age of 34.
Born in Ulongué, in Angónia, Tete province, Diogo Alberto will forever be recalled as the player who scored the goal that guaranteed the first-ever qualification of the Mambas for the African Nations Championship, in the 2014 CHAN tournament.
Diogo Alberto scored the equaliser in Benguela, in the tie against Angola, and gave Mozambique the opportunity to play in its first CHAN final phase. The clash with the Angolans had started in Maputo with a goalless draw, and the second leg took place in Benguela, where the Palancas were the first to score, but Diogo Alberto equalled the score, deciding the qualification of the Mambas.
Diogo made a name for himself at Ferroviário de Maputo after transferring from the Chingale de Tete, and won several titles with the ‘Locomotives’ of the country’s capital.
He also played for Ferroviário de Nampula and other national teams, as well as wearing the Mambas jersey on many occasions.
Alberto had not played this year, and had returned to Maputo’s Green Zone neighbourhood where he passed away after a lengthy illness. He had been admitted to the hospital twice in a short period of time due to health complications.
The Mozambican Football Federation and Clube Ferroviário de Maputo have already published notes of condolences on the loss of Diogo Alberto, who died at home.
