Daniel Chapo in Zitambira: Among flower wreaths, ancestral rituals and the diplomacy of the sacred

Carlos Jambo, born on July 5, 1954, and also known simply as “Mafavuka”, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2023, at the age of 69.
Carlos Jambo joined the ranks of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) as a youth. As a photographer, he documented many significant moments of the independence struggle and later become the official photographer to the first President of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel.
According to family sources, Carlos Jambo felt unwell and became breathless in the early hours of Saturday (23-07), and was immediately rushed to the hospital, “and unfortunately, the family came to receive information that he was no longer with us”.

The deceased was one of the ten survivors of the Mbuzini plane crash in South Africa that claimed the lives of Samora Machel and 34 members of his entourage on October 19, 1986.
