Ireland announces €3.5 million in new funding for Education in Mozambique

Ireland’s Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin TD, has on Thursday announced the allocation of €3.5 million in funding to strengthen education systems, improve access and provide quality education for children in Mozambique.

The Tánaiste announced the funding during a visit to the “01 de Junho” primary school in Inhambane province, Mozambique, which received support from the Education Sector Support Fund. Ireland has been working in Inhambane province for over 26 years.
The Tánaiste said:
“I am delighted to announce this funding of €3.5 million to the Education Sector Support Fund in Mozambique. Education is the bedrock of societies and sustainable development.
“As in Ireland, education is highly valued in Mozambique and a key pillar for the country’s further socio-economic development. Considered investment in education at a crucial point in Ireland’s history is the foundation of our current economic prosperity. Ireland is proud to partner with Mozambique to improve access and quality education for children around the country. Girls’ education and empowerment are essential to achieve greater social mobility, reduce poverty and inequality.”

Ireland’s mission strategy for Mozambique 2020-2024 underscores the significance of strengthening systems for quality education to reach those furthest behind first. Between 2020 and 2022, the Embassy of Ireland provided €13.5 million for Education in Mozambique through the Education Sector Support Fund, known as FASE from its Portuguese acronym.
This funding of €3.5 million will be channelled through FASE. FASE includes financial contributions from ten donors (including Global Programme for Education and the World Bank) to support effective implementation of the country’s 2020-2029 Education Strategic Plan (PEE).
Ireland also provides support to the UN Agencies and Civil Society for education in emergency projects in the North of Mozambique, and education initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of education and prevention of gender-based violence (GBV) in targeted schools.
Through the Ireland Fellows Programme, Ireland supports students from Mozambique each year to study at Master’s level in universities across Ireland.
