Mozambique: Fifty-nine thousand students to take special exam
Mozambique Customs seized 3,500 boxes of water pipe ('hookah') tobacco.
The Tax Authority (AT) of Mozambique has seized two containers of water pipe (‘hookah’) tobacco on tax evasion grounds, an official source announced yesterday.
“This merchandise should have been declared for taxes and other customs charges. The declaration was not properly made, there was evasion,” AT spokesman Fernando Tinga informed the media in Maputo.
About 3,500 boxes of hookah tobacco from South Africa were seized last week at the port of Maputo, Tinga said, noting that the Mozambican state would have lost about 26 million meticais (€372,000) if the goods had not been seized.
“About 400,000 meticais (€6,000) was declared, but in fact around 27 million meticais (€387,000) should have been,” Tinga said.
In the first quarter of this year, the AT seized more than 500 products across the country, in operations with an estimated customs value of 120 million meticais (€1.7 million).
