Much of the central Mozambican port city of Beira was plunged into darkness on Saturday morning, because of a fire that destroyed much of the electricity substation in the neighbourhood of Munhava.
According to a press release from the publiclyowned electricity company, EDM, the ensuing massive power cut deprived over 160,000 EDM clients of their electricity.
Alternative sources of power were used to allow key installations such as Beira Central Hospital, and the city’s international airport to continue functioning.
EDM declared that, once the fire had been brought under control, technical teams worked to re-establish normal electricity supplies as soon as possible.
The causes of the Munhava fire are not yet known
