Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday addressed a message of condolences to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, following the train accident which killed 275 people in the east of the country on Friday.
The Mozambican head of state said he was “deeply saddened and shocked”, and expressed his “solidarity” with the Indian people.
Filipe Nyusi also said he had confidence in ongoing efforts to “relieve the pain of those affected” and prevent further accidents of this nature.
According to the latest report from the health department of the state of Odisha, in eastern India, in addition to the 275 deaths already recorded, the disaster injured 1,175 people, of whom 344 are still hospitalised.
The accident was caused by an error in the signalling system, resulting in one of the three trains involved (two of them passenger services) to change lines and smash into a stationary freight train, India’s Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday.
