The Government of France has, through the World Food Programme (WFP), granted €1 million to support the organisation’s nutrition emergency response in three provinces in northern Mozambique, the WFP has announced.
“As part of the government’s national Nutritional Rehabilitation Programme, WFP delivers specialised nutritious food and necessary medical equipment to more than 300 health facilities in the three northern provinces to treat moderate acute malnutrition,” the WFP note released yesterday reads.
“The contribution will be used to provide treatment and prevention services to over 90,000 malnourished pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under five suffering in Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa provinces,” the note continues.
“France’s support is timely and enables us to provide a package of preventive and treatment activities among vulnerable groups of people,” declared Antonella D’Aprile, WFP representative in Mozambique, quoted in the document.
In Mozambique, chronic malnutrition continues to affect 38% of children under the age of five, according to 2021 data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
According to INE, distribution by province shows differences, with the northern and central zones showing prevalence at “very high” levels, and Nampula province having the most serious situation.
Since 2021, France has provided a total of €2.5 million in contributions to WFP activities in Mozambique.
